In 1767, Samuel Wallisbecame the first European to discover the island of Tahiti. The second person to step foot on Tahiti was the French voyager, Bougainvillein April 1768. Subsequently in Bougainvilles travel accounts, he described the island as an earthly paradise, where men were noble savages and women were like Venus.
