Pivoine is dedicated to the peony, the voluptuous-looking flower that spectacularly blooms in late spring. According to a popular tale, the flower was named after Paeon, the physician to the Greek gods who cured Pluto -thus angering his teacher Asclepius, the god of medicine. A jealous Asclepius threatened to kill Paeon, whom Zeus saved by turning him into a peony. Having been growing in temperate climates for thousands of years, peonies have been timelessly revered for their extraordinary beauty, refined aroma, and healing properties.
